When it comes to Joomla websites there's any number of parallels you can make when it comes to maintenance. Cars, sheds, boilers spring to mind. All work well but all need maintaining at some point along the way. A car doesn't run forever and with regular maintenance you can keep it running at optimum. Without regular servicing you get the odd bulb blow here, a bit of paint chipped there and before you know it the sum of all this brings everything to a halt.
And even well known and renowned websites can fall victim to hackers and those of a criminal persuasion. In November 2015 a prestigious British newspaper "The Independent" fell victim to a hacker, who undetected for several weeks infected computers of the website's visitors with a dangerous virus.
So even the greatest can be hacked and sadly, the risk of that happening can never be completely eliminated. However, it is certainly possible to protect yourself from most home-grown, amateur hackers who use well-known vulnerabilities to mass-hack websites.
Website Administration - a new product we offer – increases security of your Joomla websites and enables a rapid response in the event of a hacking attempt.
At MSWD we can arrange to monitor and maintain your Joomla site enabling you and your business to remain online.
I expect you've been there. You're looking at your website and something's not quite right. Maybe the page is loading slowly, some of the images aren't showing or horror of horrors your links are leading to some unsavoury sites!
It's a fact of life that there's every possibility that your website will fail at some point, be it from external hacking, changes in the setup or even when it's not been set up correctly. When this happens you're left to find out what's gone wrong and then put things right. For many people this isn't really a practical option as the complexity of a website lays beyond their experience and often is not something they want to get involved in. They just want it to work, and if it goes wrong they want it to be fixed.
That's where MSWD can help. We have over 10 years experience of building and designing websites, hosting, coding and also cleaning up hacked websites.
If you're in a position where you need someone to clean up your website and want to take advantage of our experience then please do consider using MSWD.
We require an initial £25 payment for us to assess your site. After reviewing your site we will be in a position to see how to restore your site back to a safe, working environment. If we consider that your site is beyond our capability then we will inform you and refund your initial payment. Should you then wish to progress there will be a £25 payment for us to complete the work.
The work we provide is limited to repairing your website and returning it to the condition it was in prior to the issues. This doesn't mean we will fix anything and everything that may be an issue on your website!
At MSWD (Mustard Seed Web Design) we design, build and host websites for the personal, charity and mall business sector. If you haven't been building your websites incorporating an SSL certificate then there's another reason why you should. Google Chrome, version 56 onwards, which I think was January 2017 is marking websites that have a login with password component as 'Not Secure' unless the credentials are passed using HTTPS. That's a big downside in terms of visitors and search engine rankings.
Every now and then you get to work building a site using a template requested by a customer and you think "Wow!, what a great template." How much sweeter when you come across a free template that just shrieks "Quality".
I've just been changing my reseller account to another host and discovered that Perfect Dashboard was now failing in initiating backups and updates. Talking with the support at Perfect Dashboard and they suggested it was likely that Perfect Dashboard was being blocked by Apache's mod_security.
The real title of this post should be "Google, Arse, Elbow". I'm working on a site for a client and it's starting to appear in the Google index. However, imagine my shock when Google tells me that my site isn't mobile friendly. Google pops a message that's only seen by you in the search results and, apparently applies an SEO penalty.
You should always have something in place to try and protect your Joomla setup from brute force attacks. These attacks are where a script or cracked website continually tries to login either through the front or the admin area of your site.
Let's start with the elephant in the room. Do you back up your Joomla website?
There, that's got everything out in the open. Now to take the opportunity to get the message home.
